The Rise of Famous Poker Players
:
Since the early 90′s we have witnessed the rise of popularity of poker card-games, Texas Holdem Poker in particular, and the birth of famous poker players. As a result, a whole new segment of stars have emerged and we have famous poker stars. Whenever a large tournament is shown on TV, newscasters find the pro poker players, showcasing their moves. The same thing goes for the Internet – we always search for famous poker players at www.pokerstars.co.uk , curious to see their play. The manners and sayings of many famous poker stars become the talk of our day.
The big poker events create new stars every year. For example, Phil Hellmuth became recognized as a poker star by winning the WSOP world championship at the age of 24. Nicknamed “Poker Brat” for his cocky behavior, Phil has won since then 10 more WSOP bracelets, all of them in Pot Limit or No Limit Holdem competitions. Another outstanding figure among pro poker players is Doyle Brunson, who has been a leader in his field for more than five decades. He has won two consecutive Main Events holding a ten and a two, completing to a full house in both cases.
Can anyone earn a spot among the famous poker players?
:
But recent years have introduced us to a new generation of players. Thanks to Chris Moneymaker’s success, poker began a new boom at the beginning of this century. Formerly employed as an accountant, he joined the famous poker stars after winning the World Championship of 2003 – after paying only forty dollars for a satellite tournament! His fairy tale ending became the inspiration for hundreds of thousands of poker fans.
Famous poker stars, naturally, are not made by Main Event championships only. Anyone who follows the sport, is familiar with pro poker players such as Daniel Negreanu and Gus Hansen. These two generate a great deal of interest wherever they go. All famous poker players are good friends with Negreanu, who brings a great deal of special judgment to the table. Gus Hansen is renowned for his ever changing style of play, implementing both tight and loose tactics. Together with famous poker players, these two can be seen on such television series as “High Stakes Poker” and “Poker After Dark”. Mike Matusow, called “The Mouth” because of his never ending and often funny talking, is another poker celebrity who appears on TV.
Poker is no longer just the domain of men. One of the most well known female poker players is Jennifer Harman, the only woman who regularly plays the high-stakes cash game at the Bellagio. Another one is Annie Duke, “The Duchess of Poker”, who won the first WSOP Tournament of Champions, beating nine other world’s famous poker players and earning two million dollars. And let us not forget the movie star Jennifer Tilly, who who rose through the field of hundreds of female poker players in the Ladies’ Texas Holdem tournament and won her championship bracelet.
As fun and exciting the lives of famous poker players are, they also experience some disadvantages. The entire poker world becomes familiar with their game style. Their behavior is closely closely scrutinized and picked apart on the Internet. Every tournament becomes a battleground, where other participants strive to personally remove the famous poker stars from the competition. Which is why winning the tournament becomes harder and harder for the famous poker players.
Despite the drawbacks, famous poker players appreciate being at the top of the poker world – and if you can combine your skill with a little luck, you might become one of them, too!
